Downing College

Downing College was founded in 1800 from the will of the grandson of Sir George Downing, whose ownership of a piece of land in Whitehall gave the name to one of the most famous streets in Britain.

Neo-classical

Downing College consists of many elegant neo-classical buildings designed by Architect William Wilkins and more recently the award winning architects Caruso St John and Quinlain Terry.

Downing is home to undergraduates, graduates, tutors and professors but more recently the College has opened its doors wider to welcome conferences and weddings to be held in its buildings and grounds.

Wayfinding Consultants Ltd have worked with the College on a wide range of projects with the intention to maximise the commercial operations of the College, but not compromise the academic feel of the institution.

Over the years we have developed:

  • an elegant and non-evasive sign wayfinding and mapping system
  • designed new printed literature, books and leaflets
  • re-designed the College shield, and provided Marque and stationery guidelines
  • designed a new Conference Services Brochure
  • re-designed the way the College communicates its accounts

Downing College also uses our Menu Generator programme to great effect at dinners, banquets and everyday lunches.

These projects combine to provide joined up feel to all College comunication material, helping to provide an unforgettable experience for students and visitors.

Quinlan Terry’s Green theatre, and Quentin Blake’s green griffin

More recently the College commissioned Quinlan Terry to design a low-energy Theatre, modelled on the famous Georgian Theatre in Richmond.

The new Theatre is a great success, and we were involved in providing the Theatre wayfinding and statutory sign system, as well as working with illustrator and College alumni Quentin Blake's ‘Green Griffin’ which is to be the College's green credential stamp.

Our work with the College continues...
